2021 Scholarship Awardee

Tina Hsu

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Tina Hsu moved to Houston, TX with her parents and sibling when she was nine years old. As can be imagined, the initial transition was no walk in the park, but with hard work and the support of kind teachers and family, she quickly learned the language and adapted to her new home. Luckily, she had at least another thing going for her, having hailed from the subtropical climate of Taipei, she was no stranger to the persistent heat and humidity which pervades Houston. About a decade later, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a concentration in modern Japanese Literature. A few years afterwards, she also earned a graduate degree from University of California, San Diego, School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (now known as School of Global Policy and Strategy). She first came into contact with art classes about six years ago when she enrolled at Glassell Studio School for a darkroom photography class. The art works she saw displayed in the hallways engendered a curiosity about other art disciplines and she soon found herself enrolled in various other art classes as well - one after another, after another. Which eventually lead her to the diverse world of printmaking. At present, she is mainly exploring creative endeavors in silkscreen. She also continues her practice in darkroom photography. She currently lives and works in Houston, TX.
